Ever wonder what lives on Ring Mountain?

Did you know there are 109 different types of birds, 75 different butterflies, 44 different mammals, and 19 different reptiles and amphibians that call Ring Mountain home? In order to learn about the diverse wildlife on Ring Mountain, the 5th graders at MCDS were divided into 5 teams of scientists: mammalogists, herpetologists, ophiologists, ornithologists, and entomologists. Each student selected one organism to study based on the team’s focus, and then designed their own questions to research.

The mammalogists studied mammals including the California vole and the bobcat. The herpetologists studied reptiles and amphibians including the Western skink and the Arboreal salamander. The ophiologists studied snakes including the Western rattlesnake and the Ringneck. Ornithologists study birds, and the team of 5th graders studied the Cedar Waxwing, Anna’s hummingbird, and the Oak titmouse, to name a few. The team of entomologists focused on butterflies including the Gray hairstreak and the Cloudless sulfur.

Their findings have been recorded and posted on this blog for you to listen to, enjoy, and learn from.
